JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With temperatures in north Florida dipping to record lows, and the current freezing trend not showing signs of lessening in the days ahead, Second Harvest North Florida is doing its part to ensure that Jacksonville’s hunger-fighting organizations have additional resources to handle the increased volume of people seeking assistance.

Second Harvest North Florida secured two tractor-trailers of fresh food that will be distributed to its member agencies, in addition to regularly provided food resources – with the largest portion of the products being provided to the city’s primary feeding sites: including The Salvation Army, Trinity Rescue Mission, City Rescue Mission and Clara White Mission.

All product not used by the feeding sites will be distributed to the more than 500 other member agencies Second Harvest serves in north Florida.

“Our agencies are seeing need at its peak right now,” Second Harvest Executive Director Thomas Mantz said. “Agencies that serve meals and house people have been at maximum capacity every night during the last week, and this cold spell isn’t finished. Our mission at Second Harvest is to provide food to people in need, and we hope that these resources arrive at the perfect time for our agencies and the families they help.”

The food being distributed includes spinach (9 pallets), mixed fruit (11 pallets), string beans (4 pallets), potatoes (6 pallets) and oranges (13 pallets).
