The latest issue of Food Matters – a newsletter produced by Second Harvest North Florida – is out and focuses on a couple of subjects that we can all rally around.

Food Matters Spring 2010Food matters takes its readers into the lives of local children and how many in north Florida struggle with hunger on a daily basis. No quote from this issue is more telling than that of a child who tells a teacher that “it wasn’t my turn to eat today.” Parents are forced to make tough decisions every day in these tough economic times but feeding their children should never be a sacrifice that has to be made.

Not only is Second Harvest North Florida helping children through its Kids Cafe and Backpack program – both of which are highlighted on page one of Food Matters – it is also getting involved with programs such as Girls Inc., to help provide healthy after school and summer snacks to the girls involved in the program.

Finally, Food Matters takes a look at how you can help through an event that happens every year in Ponte Vedra, as well as through a new event coming to the area.

Second Harvest North Florida will once again team up with The PLAYERS Championship to help raise funds through its Birdies for Charity event. For those who wish to get involved in the program, all it takes is a pledge of at least 2 cents for every birdie made during this year’s TPC at the famed Stadium Course at the TPC Sawgrass. All money raised from the event will go directly to Second Harvest North Florida. Last year’s professionals made more than 1,500 birdies during the four-day event.

The professional golf doesn’t stop in May when The PLAYERS Championship crowns a winner. A new event – The Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open – will take place in October at the TPC Valley Course. This Nationwide Tour event promises some of the best up and coming players in professional golf. All ticket sales from the event will go to local charities as part of the PepsiCo Birdies Fore Charity program. Fans who purchase tickets to the event can choose which charity their money will go towards. Check out the story in Food Matters then click on the link below to purchase your tickets.
