Second Harvest North Florida Programs

Since 1979, Second Harvest North Florida's mission has been to reduce hunger in the community by creating partnerships with nonprofit organizations. Second Harvest distributes food to more than 450 member agencies in 17 north Florida counties. Member agencies include soup kitchens, food pantries, senior citizens groups, nonprofit daycares, youth programs, residential facilities and many others.

In addition to its food collection and distribution responsibilities, Second Harvest operates the following programs:

Kids Cafe

The Kids Cafe works through donated and purchased foods and supplies. Menus are developed and items are distributed to participating sites. Staff and volunteers assist with homework and other planned activities. Learn more about Kids Cafe program.

Backpack Program

The BackPack™ Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations.Learn more about Backpack program.

Mobile Pantry

The Second Harvest Mobile Pantry Program is designed to effectively distribute donated food directly to families in need in their own neighborhood. Learn more about Mobile Pantry program.

Recovered Food Sharing

More than 24 million pounds of donated and rescued surplus food is distributed to more than 450 nonprofit agencies; churches and synagogues, youth services, day care and rehabilitation centers that operate food services, soup kitchens or pantries. Learn more about Recovered Food Sharing program.

SNAP Outreach Program

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps put food on the table for some 31 million people per month. It provides low-income households with monthly electronic benefits they can use like cash at most grocery stores. This is the same program formerly known as food stamps. Second Harvest is also a partner in the Flagler County Mobile Benefits Program, which was formed to help residents gain access to the millions of dollars in SNAP benefits that go unused each year. Learn more about the Mobile Benefits Program.

Community Gardens Initiative

Through the use of donated, vacant parcels in food insecure neighborhoods, we are working to empower families in hunger to grow vegetables and fruit in quantities sufficient to supplement every meal. Learn more about the Community Gardens Initiative. 

Health Begins Before Birth

Second Harvest recently launched the Health Begins Before Birth program that provides low-income expectant mothers in our area with nutritious meals during their pregnancies. The program is designed to reduce the area’s infant mortality and premature birth rates. Learn more about the Health Begins Before Birth program.
