2011 Hunger Action Month

Date:
September 1, 2011 (All day) - September 30, 2011 (All day)
Location:
National event
Description:

September is Hunger Action Month, an opportunity to place a spotlight on the issue of domestic hunger while creating opportunities for people on the First Coast and abroad to participate in the ongoing battle against it – either through volunteering, giving or advocacy.

The effort is sponsored by Feeding America, the national association of food banks of which Second Harvest is a member, to raise awareness for the fight against hunger - and to show people just how big a contribution can make when they consider how much they spend each month on certain non-essentials, then donate an equal amount of money to provide meals.

Help Second Harvest by donating money, food or time - or by encouraging your business, organization or place of worship to partner with Second Harvest in helping to eliminate hunger for our neighbors.

How YOU can help

Become a financial sponsor of the Empty Bowls Luncheon
For every $1 donated to Second Harvest North Florida, seven meals are created for people in need. That means a $25 ticket to the Empty Bowls Luncheon provides a meal for 175 seniors who live on a fixed income, that a $500 corporate table generates 3,500 meals for working families who can’t make ends meet, and that a $1,000 sponsorship will provide weekend meals for 7,000 children who might otherwise go hungry.

Host a bowl-painting event at your business or organization
Art In Action is the focus of the Empty Bowls Luncheon – with thousands of handcrafted and hand-painted bowls from schoolchildren, community groups and local seniors on display each year at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. As attendance increases each year, so too does the need for beautifully decorated bowls to display, sell and give away to luncheon attendees. Consider hosting a bowl painting event at your place of business or organizational meeting.

Second Harvest has partnered with local pottery companies Pink Flamingo Arts, Pottery Works and Doing Dishes to offer on-site bowl-painting events. The cost is just $8 per bowl, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the luncheon, along with the finished bowl being donated to the cause. The $8 per bowl includes: bowl, paint, paint brushes, firing of bowls and transportation of bowls to Second Harvest North Florida.
