Thanks to the generous support of our many donors, we were able to feed almost twice as many hungry families and children as we did in 2009. That’s right – more than 19 million pounds of food distributed to individuals and families, which represents an astounding 85 percent increase in just 12 months. Literally translated, that is enough food to create 14.6 million meals.

Since 2007, when Second Harvest distributed 7.6 million pounds – Second Harvest has shown a 149 percent increase in poundage distributed as the nation’s economic recession took its toll.

And while that number sounds incredibly good, the fact remains that Second Harvest is a long way from achieving our goal of 40 million pounds distributed – which would effectively meet the demand of the population within our reach that has no idea from where or when its next meal will come.

Hunger is a debilitating condition that renders the victim unable to handle even the most basic of tasks. Children cannot function in school, adults cannot excel in the workplace and the elderly cannot sustain their health when they are hungry. For many hungry families, Second Harvest North Florida’s food is the difference that allows them to go on with their life in ways many of us would take for granted.
